Research includes physical and chemical studies on the structure of proteins and nucleic acids, the development of physical techniques for the analysis of molecular structure, and instrument development. A total of 1,813 research grants and National Research Service Awards were funded in fiscal year 2001. An estimated total of 1,847 research grants and National Research Service Awards will be funded in fiscal year 2002, and an estimated 1,897 research grants and National Research Service Awards are expected to be funded in fiscal year 2003.
